The Day Treatment Program

The Laurel Hill Inn Day Treatment Program is designed as a four to six week program and allows for intensive eating disorder treatment while an individual continues to live at home. In some cases, day treatment is often the appropriate next step following inpatient or residential treatment. Others may choose day treatment to increase structure and aid in breaking behavior patterns, as well as to support the work individuals are engaged in with their outpatient team. The structure of the program is dedicated to real life skills practice and learning through personal experiences with the goal of increasing individuals’ capacity to fully participate in and enjoy life.

Creating an environment where one feels safe, comfortable, and free to openly share personal experiences and feelings is extremely important to our clinical staff. Each day is composed of groups to help clients acquire techniques for managing emotions, tolerating distress, and making connections between thoughts, feelings and behaviors. Our groups include process and planning groups, skill building, relaxation and meditation, nutrition education, body image and the media, self-esteem, and relapse prevention. Programming draws upon many techniques, including Dialectic Behavioral Therapy (DBT) and Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). We also offer yoga as an optional weekly activity.

The first group of the day is a process group to review each client’s evening or weekend activities with the aim of understanding links between emotions and ED behaviors or urges. The group helps clients recognize what they may have needed in the moment when urges/behaviors arose, and identify coping skills that can be employed the following night. The day ends with an evening planning group which assists clients in integrating their learning into their personal life experience.

This level of care also provides structure and support around meals to help our clients recognize and change ED behaviors. Breakfast, lunch and a morning snack are provided, and meals are supervised by specialized staff. Clients have the opportunity to practice portioning their meals and snacks, and work with the staff nutritionist to create a balanced meal plan with appropriate variety. This hands-on experience allows individuals to become familiar with their meal plan and increases confidence in meeting nutritional needs outside of the program structure.

Treatment is provided from 8:00 AM to 2:30 PM, Monday through Friday. To participate in this level of care, clients need to be medically and psychiatrically stable and have an outpatient treatment team. Clients must continue in outpatient therapy on a weekly basis and be seen by their physician as needed for the duration of treatment. For continued stay, clients are expected to attend each day and participate fully in all aspects of the treatment program.
